PSO Season Brochure

CONSULT: We met with the client and discussed what they had done in the past, and talked about the function of the brochure and the mail-back portion as well as the expected overall look. The purpose of the brochure was to highlight Peter Rubardt’s 10 seasons with the PSO, and the quality yet approachability of the symphony and the performers.

RESEARCH: We researched other Symphony brochures from other markets including Cincinnati, New York, Chicago, and Mobile. We also evaluated the pieces being performed and the featured performers. Then, we began locating images of the guest performers. Christopher attended practice sessions and took candid photos of the symphony to strengthen the sense of “real world” approachability.

EVOLVE: We brought several ideas to the table to discuss the best route to take. Beginning with the cover concept, we entertained several ideas of Peter Rubardt on the Cover. A concept rose to the forefront—that of creating a typographic logo to celebrate Peter and removing the current symphony logo from the cover to allow the new graphic to stand on its own. Then the idea of using a highlighted spot color for each page evolved. We also decided to use photos of the performers in street clothes to make them seem more real.

ASSEMBLE: Reviewing all the photographs and copy received, we assembled the ideas into a mock brochure. The functionality of the brochure as a mail back piece was discussed. The detachable order form was designed to fit directly in a standard sized envelope. Since all information in the brochure was considered valuable, it was purposely left blank on the backside to reduce the risk of the reader missing anything.

TAILOR: Back with the client, we discussed all the ideas at length. After reviewing several cover concepts and a couple interior concepts, we inserted all the copy as requested and discussed paper stock. We agreed upon an uncoated, heavier paper stock to add to the approachability and quality of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

EXECUTE: After finalizing the layout, we dealt directly with the Orchestra’s chosen printer to make sure the end product was exactly as intended.
